This book is all about the boundaries people build themselves, walling them from living a life they don’t feel they are worthy of having. Instead of a battle including the crossing of swords and the shedding of blood, Hobb has each character fight for the chance to feel their own worth. There are so many moments that I thought to myself “I’ve felt that.” or “I know exactly how that feels.” Times I stopped reading because I felt the book in my hand turn into a mirror, reflecting the times I have personally struggled with what these fictional characters were experiencing. I have found bits and pieces of myself in every one of her stories, but none more so than Dragon Keeper.

The people, she writes about are real and have pains that all readers may identify and sympathize with. Hobb is forever the queen of character-driven stories. In her he finds purpose and a reason to hide now more than ever the truth behind his secrets. Leftrin, the hard and weathered bargeman, has always faced life alone, living one day after the next until he meets Alise. Like everyone else, Thymara is fascinated by the return of dragons: it is as if they symbolise the return of hope to their war-torn world. But her father saved her and her mother has never forgiven him. Born with black claws and other aberrations, she should have been exposed at birth.
